THE FIRST 3 MONTHS
Understanding the Fourth Trimester
The first three months of life are often referred to as the “fourth trimester” because babies continue to need many of the conditions they experienced in the womb. During this period, babies are learning to adapt to a completely new environment while their brains and nervous systems undergo rapid development.
This session explores what is typical during the first three months of life, including crying, feeding, sleeping, regulation, movement and social development. We discuss why some babies settle more easily than others, how temperament influences behaviour, and practical ways parents can support their baby's adjustment to life outside the womb.
Parents will leave with a deeper understanding of their baby’s needs and greater confidence in navigating this often challenging stage.
In this session, you will learn:
• What the fourth trimester is and why it matters
• Typical newborn development during the first three months
• Sleep, feeding and regulation patterns
• Why babies cry and how to respond effectively
• Early social and emotional development
• Practical strategies for supporting your baby’s transition into the world
Because the first three months lay the foundation for everything that follows.
